Council committees to meet

South Boston Council committees will hold their monthly work sessions this afternoon beginning at 5:45 p.m. in Council Chambers on Yancey Street. Members of the Finance panel will review the Town’s monthly financial statement presented by Finance Director Erle Scott; the panel will also consider his request to charge off delinquent personal property taxes that the town has been unable to collect during the period of 2001-2004.

Oscar B. “John” Tate died Friday, Aug. 27 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home in Danville. He had recently celebrated his 94th birthday with family and friends at his side.

The Caregivers of Autistic Children recently presented a donation of $2,000 to the Halifax County Public Schools Education Foundation, to fund two $1,000 scholarships for Halifax County teachers.

Suspicious letters sent to Public Defenders office

Virginia State Police are investigating the receipt Wednesday of two letters by the Public Defenders Office in Halifax that contained what authorities termed a "suspicious substance."

Bloodmobile returns Monday, Tuesday

Regular and long-time donors such as David Ferguson, should be mindful of the 56 day period of time between blood donations (eligibility requirements) when the bloodmobile is set up in the area on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 30 and 31. Due to low donation numbers and high usage during summer months and around holidays, the American Red Cross bloodmobile will be set-up in the regular locations as every month. Regular donors, however; will find that they are not eligible yet and will not be able to give until the next set-up date of Monday, Sept. 13 2-7 p.m. at the American Legion, Post 8, Jeffress Blvd. in South Boston and on Tuesday, Sept. 14, from noon-6 p.m. at the Mary Bethune Gym in Halifax.
