Preparations under way for 2010 Ducks on the Dan

Volunteers got together Monday evening to help with the annual Duck Cleansing in preparations for Saturday's Ducks on the Dan. The ducks are cleaned, old number scraped off and new numbers placed on the ducks for the annual duck race on Saturday. The pre-race activities will begin at 11 a.m. in Constitution Square and will continue until the 3 p.m. drop, after which the winning ducks will be announced. Activities will conclude at 5 p.m. Ducks for the race are available for adoption at Duck Adoption Headquarters (Duck Central) at 432 Main Street, South Boston. Seven earn Bates scholarships

Seven Halifax County High School graduates have been named recipients of the Dr. Jesse J. Bates Scholarship for 2010. The annual scholarship is awarded to high school graduates planning a career in health care. Seven local high school graduates have been named recipients of Halifax Regional Health System’s 2010 Dr. Jesse J. Bates Scholarship. Named to honor the late Jesse J. Bates, M.D., the annual scholarship is awarded to local high school seniors planning to attend college to pursue a career in healthcare.

The Virginia Paternity Establishment Program is designed to help unmarried parents assure that the father’s name appears on the birth certificate. The Virginia Paternity Establishment Program is designed to help unmarried parents assure that the father’s name appears on the birth certificate, and at Halifax Regional Hospital and other hospitals throughout the state, the procedure is important, simple and free.

Supes look to restore cuts
