Possible error in Town of Halifax personal property tax bills

A computer error has occurred again this year at the Halifax County Commissioner of Revenue's Office involving the calculation of the total amount of vehicle license fees owed. The Halifax Town Manager encourages residents and businesses to carefully review their personal property tax notice to confirm the appropriate vehicle license fee has been assessed for the property they own ($25 per automobile or recreational vehicle and $5 per motorcycle) as of Jan. 1, 2010.

President Obama flew in to Charlottesville Friday night to rally support for endangered Democratic incumbent Tom Perriello as both major party candidates in the Fifth District congressional election made their closing arguments prior to Tuesday’s vote.

Wood-fired plant up for DEQ review

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality has scheduled a Nov. 22 public hearing on a long-dormant wood-burning power plant that backers intend to build on the outskirts of South Boston.

Funding unlikely for portable stage

Supervisors earlier asked USDA Rural Development for a grant to cover the estimated $200,000 cost of the project. Rural Development earlier indicated it might fund up to 55 percent of the total cost. Supervisors then decided to seek the remaining 45 percent from the Virginia Tobacco Commission.
