Tobacco Commission OKs funds for uranium study

The Virginia Tobacco Commission approved up to $200,000 for a socioeconomic study of uranium mining and milling during its meeting Thursday at the Hotel Roanoke.

Dr. Glenn DuBois, chancellor of the Virginia Community College System, will be the guest speaker at the Dual Enrollment Dinner of Southside Virginia Community College on May 13. The event will honor the highly motivated, exceptional students from local high schools who will graduate from SVCC before receiving their high school diplomas in 2010.

Wireless broadband gets $18.9 mil boost

An $18.9 million federal stimulus grant awarded to Mecklenburg-based Buggs Island Telephone Cooperative (BIT) promises to make high-speed broadband access available to every business and residence in 15 counties in south central Virginia including Halifax.

Friendly Corner struck again

Armed robbers struck again at Friendly Corner Store Tuesday night, marking the second time in the past several weeks that the convenience store, located on Mountain Road west of Halifax, has been robbed.

Jobless rate dips below 13 percent

Halifax County’s jobless rate dipped moderately in March to 12.9 percent, down from February’s high of 13.5 percent.
