Blood drive Monday, Tuesday

Polly Ratcliff, long-time volunteer with the American Red Cross and a recepient of the Exceptional Volunteer Service Award urges those who are eligible to donate blood on Monday, May 3 at the American Legion, Post 8, Jeffress Blvd., South Boston from 1-7 p.m. Sponsor is Riverdale Auto Parts of South Boston and Ash Avenue WMU. On Tuesday, May 4, the Red Cross Bloodmobile will be set up in the Mary Bethune, 2nd floor, Board of Supervisor’s meeting room, noon-6 p.m., sponsored by American Legion, Post 99 Auxilary. Blood Services reports an interesting note: In May of 2002, the Red Cross Bloodmobile collected 89 units at its South Boston location. Collections in 2010 number approximately 30-35 at each drive! Roll up your sleeve and give the gift of life! “Your gift supports the lifesaving mission of the American Red Cross in your community, across the country and around the world.”

Tobacco Commission approves Riverstone funding request

The Virginia Tobacco Commission on Thursday approved an award of $471,000 to the Halifax County Industrial Development Authority (IDA) for upgrades to Riverstone Technology Park.

YMCA kicks off annual support campaign

It is that time of the year for the YMCA of South Boston/Halifax County to campaign for those in need of wellness services. The goal is to raise $73,000 in 2010. By design, our community support campaign is meant to provide services and or memberships to youth, families, and seniors. We believe that every youth, family, and senior, should have the opportunity to participate in YMCA programs. A successful campaign will allow us to continue to provide and or expand much needed services to the residents of South Boston and Halifax County.

Tobacco Commission OKs funds for uranium study

The Virginia Tobacco Commission approved up to $200,000 for a socioeconomic study of uranium mining and milling during its meeting Thursday at the Hotel Roanoke.

VCCS chancellor to speak to dual enrollment students

Dr. Glenn DuBois, chancellor of the Virginia Community College System, will be the guest speaker at the Dual Enrollment Dinner of Southside Virginia Community College on May 13. The event will honor the highly motivated, exceptional students from local high schools who will graduate from SVCC before receiving their high school diplomas in 2010.
