Maker’s Market draws kids to the kitchen

South Boston News

The Southern Virginia Maker’s Market in South Hill hosted its first on-site class on Monday, Jan. 28, one year after the local food marketing cooperative first took over its new building in the heart of downtown South Hill, next to the Colonial Center. The aroma of sautéing chicken and vegetables lingered in the air as the sound of happy children, laughing and learning, could be heard from outside. Local youths learned about food preparation and tried out recipes under the tutelage of Mecklenburg County 4H Food Challenge instructors. While signups for current session are closed, there will be other opportunities to join in the fun of cooking classes at the Maker’s Market in the near future. Jennifer Bowen and Amy Hawkins with Virginia Cooperative Extension led the Monday youth class.
