Mecklenburg County schools likely to hit year-end budget target

If revenue and expenditures behave as expected, Mecklenburg County Schools will finish the year ending June 30 with $112,543 left over — just 1 percent of the budget, consultant Dr. James Blevins told the School Board Monday.

Oprah Winfrey will team up with a veteran television producer to make an HBO movie based on “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” the best-selling book on the life of a Clover woman whose cells changed the course of modern medicine.

Henrietta Lacks headstone planned

Descendants of Henrietta Lacks announced plans Sunday to dedicate a headstone at her unmarked grave in a ceremony slated to take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 29, at St. Matthews Baptist Church in Clover.

Jazz rain or shine at Occoneechee this Saturday, Sunday

The sixth annual Jazz by the Lake festival at Occoneechee State Park, U.S. 58 east of Clarksville, will run from 4:30 until dark on Saturday, May 15, and Sunday, May 16 rain or shine. If the weather looks threatening, park staff will put up tents.

Lakefest earns more accolades

Clarksville’s 33rd annual Virginia Lake Festival (Lakefest) was recently awarded the “One of the Top 20 Events in the Southeast” certifications by the Southeast Tourism Society of Atlanta. Justin Eubank, president of the Clarksville Lake Country Chamber of Commerce and Linda Williams, executive director, display the award. This year’s festival is scheduled for July 15-17.

There were happy faces all around as children and adults alike enjoyed Spring Fest 2010 in South Hill on Saturday. The Corps of Engineers set up a booth and handed out stickers to local children, including Adyson Betts, who was excited to get one. At right, Michael Redman and Gil Edwards entertained the crowd with smooth jazzy tunes. Redman (left) and Edwards will be performing again on June 8 at the South Hill Chamber of Commerce’s’ annual dinner.

Chase City takes new look at water deal

Community uneasiness about abandoning town wells has prompted Chase City Mayor Eddie Bratton to schedule a special called meeting of Town Council on 6 p.m. Monday, May 17 to review “the implications of making a water source change.”
