Grant makes peer tutoring at SVHEC possible

The Halifax Volunteer Literacy Program at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) has received a grant from the Stages of Life Foundation. The grant will allow the literacy program to start a peer tutoring initiative. Through the peer tutoring initiative, high school and community college tutors will be connected with students at the SVHEC who need math and reading assistance. Danville Community College student Jeremy Vaughan is the peer tutor coordinator as well as a tutor within the program.

Photography workshop coming to SVHEC

Thomas “TJ” Wells, an award-winning commercial photographer from Roanoke, Virginia, will be offering three photography workshops at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) on Nov. 6. The workshops are being offered as a part of the SVHEC’s College for Life Long Learning.

On Sept. 23, the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center hosted its inaugural Workforce Forward 2011 Forum. One hundred and fifteen leaders from across southern Virginia gathered for regional dialogue focused on education, employment, and economic development.
