South Boston Council votes in favor of cigarette tax

South Boston Town Council moved decisively to impose a 10 cent-per-pack tax on cigarette purchases in town by voting 4-1 in favor of the levy Monday night.

Brian Parks and Trina Champion of Farm Bureau Hillbilly Chili — boasting a secret hillbilly ingredient — accept congratulations from Liz Lowrance and Richie Richards for winning first place in the Southern Virginia Chili Cook Off on Saturday at MacCallum More Gardens in Chase City. Southwestern Blue Ribbon Chili with Bill Hill took second and Team Wilson with Rhonda Wilson, third. Also competing were : Gilly’s Chili – Philip Gilreath; Mom and Company – Maureen Roberts; and Chili Willi – Alexander Watkins Jr.. Livestock entries sought for South Central Fair

The South Central Fair Livestock Barn will be taking entries to the fair on Sunday, Oct. 10 from 1-6 p.m. and on Monday, Oct. 11 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
