Halifax man sentenced to 20 years for bank robbery

A Halifax man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for an August 2018 armed robbery of American National Bank in Centerville.

Audrey Vassar Hill, 93, of Nathalie died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2019 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Charlie Lawson Hill Jr.

Mrs. Hill was born in Halifax County on July 19, 1926, a daughter of the late William Vassar and Ruth Snead Vassar. She was a member of Mulberry Baptist Church, a retired employee of the Halifax County School System and famous for her homemade biscuits.

She is survived by three sons, Larry Hill (Rosalie) of Nathalie, Michael Hill of Forest, and Phillip Hill (Shirley) of Hurt; two daughters, Dianne Stables (Tom) of Houston, Texas, Kathryn H. Willetts of Canton, N.C.; nine grandchildren, including a special grandson, Jeremy Hill (Cassie), and a special granddaughter, Shanon Hamlette (Gerald) all of Nathalie; 14 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, James L. Hill; two grandchildren, Robert Justin Willetts and Rhiannon Marie Willetts; three brothers, and two sisters.

A funeral swill be held Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 11 a.m. at Mulberry Baptist Church by the Rev. David Hanks and the Rev. Randy Foster followed by a private burial in the Hill Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and at her residence other times.
