Bernice Carter Murphy, 102, of Halifax Road, South Boston, died Thursday, June 18, 2020 at her home. She was born in Halifax County on May 6, 1918, daughter of the late Samuel Carter and Hallie Pounds Carter.

Mrs. Murphy is survived by one daughter, Annie Murphy Burton of South Boston; one son, Robert Lee Murphy Jr. of Bronx, N.Y., and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Leslie Murphy of Alton; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, one son, John Henry Murphy, two grandsons, Andrew Murphy and Marvin Murphy, six brothers, Henry Carter, McKinley Carter, Isaac Carter, Herman Carter, Billy Carter, and John Carter and five sisters: Nettie Barksdale, Edna Brandon, Odella Bievens, Minnie Carter and Hallie Carter.

A funeral will be held Monday, June 22, at 11:30 a.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 11 a.m. until time of service. Rev. Harvey Bigelow will be the eulogist. Burial will follow in New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Public viewing was held Sunday from noon-6 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home.
