Carlwell Duncan Sr.

Carwell Duncan Sr. was born on March 17, 1927 to the late Will and Willie Duncan in Boydton. He died Monday, Feb. 13, 2018 at CMH- VCU Hospital. He received his education at the Boydton Graded School and the Old West End High School. At an early age he was baptized and joined the St. Paul’s Baptist Church. He accepted Christ and remained a faithful member throughout his life until his health declined.

As a teenager, Carwell joined the United States Air Force and was stationed in Pensicola, Fla., where he served for two years and seven months. After being discharged he worked at the Old Box Mill in Boydton. In August 1951, Carwell married to the late Edna Wooten. To this union, God blessed them with 12 children.He was then employed by Burlington Industries where he worked for 38 years and 11 days before retiring in 1990.

He leaves to cherish his loving memories: Carwell Jr. (Annie) of Boydton, Gerald of Chase City, Ernestine Holmes (Charlie) of Boydton, Reginald (Tracey), Linda Evans (Thomas), Louis all of Boydton. Bernard of Chase City, Dwight of Plainfield, N.J., Frances Overby (Abner) of Boydton, and a grandson he raised Jeffrey of the home. One sister: Rebecca Ratliff, three: sisters-in-law, seven: brothers-in-law, thirty grandchildren, forty five great grandchildren, his close friends: Alice Simmons, Betty Logan, Clarence Burwell, Clem Oliver, Michael Newton and a host of other relatives and friends.

Carwell was preceded in death by his loving wife Edna, seven siblings: Hattie, Wallace, Vera, David, Willie, Martha and James; three children: Teresa Ann And Johnny Duncan and Randolph Evans; one grandson: Johnny Duncan Jr.

A funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018 at St. Paul’s Baptist Church.

Services were entrusted into Carter’s Funeral Home.
