Carrie Lee Hayes Spain

Carrie Lee Hayes Spain, age 87, passed away July 24, 2010 in Chase City, Virginia. Her husband, Kenneth Lawson Spain, preceded her in death. She was born May 26, 1923 and was the oldest child of Larnie and Haskin Hudson Hayes of Buffalo Junction, and the sister of the late Dorothy Hayes Hite and Mary Carolyn Hayes Thompson.

Carrie Lee was a graduate of Clarksville High School, Class of 1941. That same year she married Kenneth Spain and moved to Skipwith, where she remained for 62 years. Until her health declined, she was active in New Hope Baptist Church in Skipwith, where she sang in the choir, taught the children’s and intermediate Sunday school classes, and was a member of the WMU for a number of years. After retirement, she was a CMH volunteer. She especially enjoyed her flowers, cooking, and making quilts.

Carrie Lee is survived by her daughter, Joan Carolyn Spain Spencer (Stanley); grandsons Cal Spencer (Meri Page) and Brandon Spencer (Elizabeth); great grandchildren, Ben, Caroline, Ellie, Kate, and Emme, all of Kenbridge. She is also survived by her brother, Thomas Gray Hayes (Charlotte), several nieces, nephews, cousins, and devoted friends.

A special thank you to the staff of Pineview Rest Home and Chase City Nursing Center for their excellent care during the past few years.

The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home in Clarksville, on July 25, 2010.

A funeral was held July 26, 2010 at 11 a.m. at New Hope Baptist Church in Skipwith. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
