Halifax man sentenced to 20 years for bank robbery

Carter Claiborne Jr. of Queens, N.Y. and formerly of Halifax County died Thursday, Aug. 29 at Dry Harbor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Queens, N.Y. at the age of 87.

Mr. Claiborne was born in Halifax County on Oct. 11, 1931 to the late Carter Claiborne Sr. and Elizabeth Faulkner-Claiborne. He was married to Christine Tucker-Claiborne and was a U.S. Army Veteran. He was a member of Concord Baptist Church in Brooklyn, N.Y. and a previous member of First Baptist Church.

Mr. Claiborne is survived by his wife, Christine Tucker-Claiborne of Queens, N.Y., two daughters, Jean La’Verne Claiborne and Sandra Faulkner-Douglas, both of Queens, N.Y., a son, Kevin Faulkner of Pennsylvania; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; a sister, Lula Claiborne-Olds of Danville; a brother, William Bryant Claiborne (Harriett) of South Boston; three sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Claiborne was preceded in death by four sisters: Connie M. Claiborne, Pattie Claiborne-Younger, Irene Claiborne-Peters and Dorothy Claiborne-Braithwaite; one brother: William Joseph Claiborne; eight brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law.

A funeral will be held Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 11 a.m. with services at First Baptist Church, Ferry Street, South Boston, with Rev. Dr. Allan G. Smith Sr. officiating and Rev. Hayward Jennings as eulogist. Burial will follow in Rose Garden Cemetery.

Public viewing will be Tuesday, Sept. 10 from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home chapel.

The family will receive friends at the residence of William Bryant Claiborne and Harriett Claiborne, 1183 River Road, South Boston.
