Charlie Bailey Conner, 82, of South Boston, died Sunday, May 5, 2019 at his home. He was born in Halifax County on May 9, 1936, son of the late Lewis Nelson Conner and the late Rena Lacks Conner and was married to the late Barbara Vaughan Conner for over 59 years.

He was a former employee of Burlington Industries, Dan River Mills and Enterprise Car Rentals. He loved NASCAR and was a constant fixture at the South Boston Speedway. He had quite a “green thumb” for gardening and was quite good at making yard ornaments in his woodworking shop.

Mr. Conner is survived by his children, Gary R. Conner and wife Carolyn of Spout Springs, Terry N. Conner and wife Mary Lee of Youngsville, N.C., Donna F. Conner of South Boston; grandchildren, Vince P. Conner of Richmond, Ashley E. Sharp and husband Brian of Chesterfield, McKenzie A. Stevens and wife Allison of South Boston, Xavier Beard of South Boston, Amanda J. Conner and Grace L. Conner, both of Youngsville, N.C., great-grandchild, Briley E. Sharp of Chesterfield; siblings, Myrtle C. Day and Florence W. Davis, both of South Boston, Fannie C. Aman of Florida, Mary A. Anderson and husband Bobby of Richmond, Clinton Conner and wife Connie of Hampton, Bobby N. Conner and wife Mary of Richmond.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy W. Snead and a brother, Flave A. Williams Jr.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, May 11, at 2 p.m. at Grace Churchyard Cemetery, News Ferry.

The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home on Friday from 7:00-8:30 p.m. and other times at his home.
