Chester Johnson Hargrove

Chester Johnson “Mick” Hargrove, 74, of Bronx, N.Y., formerly of Halifax County, died Thursday, March 9, 2017. He was born in Halifax County on Dec. 17, 1942, a son of the late Arthur Lee Hargrove and Alice Dixon Hargrove. He was a retired building manager for M.D. Carlisle Realty Corporation, New York.
Mr. Hargrove is survived one son, Steven C. Whitehurst, his son’s mother, Dorothy Lafaye Whitehurst and his daughter’s mother, Joanne Muhammad, all of New York City; a sister, Anne K. Long and husband Willie of South Boston; one sister-in-law, Johnnie “Sam” Amis of New York, N.Y.; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tracy Hargrove, sister Kay H. Wilkerson and three brothers, Arthur Lee Hargrove Jr., Ira Lee Hargrove and Harold H. Amis.
A funeral will be held Monday, March 20, at noon at The Crawford House with Bishop John C. Williams Jr. officiating and Byron K. Long eulogist. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Public viewing Sunday, March 19 from noon-6 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at 5149 East Hyco Road, South Boston.
