Doris C. (Dot) Nelson, 89, of South Boston, died Thursday, May 7, 2020. She was born in Halifax County on Sept. 23, 1930, daughter of the late Newton Jefferson Cassada and the late Ella Oakes Cassada. She was married to the late Thomas Pool (T.P.) Nelson. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, where she was one of the founders of the FBC Weekday School. She taught school in the Halifax County Public School System. Doris Anne will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.

Ms. Nelson is survived by her children, Tommy Nelson (Barbara) of South Boston and Anne Garner Meeks (Greg) of Halifax; daughter-in-law, Kayanne Nelson; four grandchildren, Stowe Nelson, Will Nelson, Holley Anne Winikoff (Ben) and Sarah Alice Meeks; great-granddaughter, Lindley Winikoff; and special friend, Frances Sutphin.

She was preceded in death by her son, Jeff Nelson and her siblings, Arthur Cassada, Bill Cassada and Hattie Hart.

Private graveside services were held Saturday, May 9, at 11 a.m. at Oak Ridge Cemetery with Rev. Susan Davis and Rev. Garrett Bowman officiating. In keeping with CDC guidelines regarding COVID-19, the funeral service was livestreamed via Powell Funeral Home’s Facebook page.

The family received friends at the home of Anne Garner and Greg Meeks, 1070 Brook Run Road, Halifax.
