Man sentenced to year in prison on drug count

Ten arrested, seven more sought in drug, firearms sweep

A long-term investigation has resulted in the arrest of 10 individuals in the Southside Virginia region on approximately 31 drug and firearm charges.

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office has identified Jessica Stroud, 35, of Waynesboro as the victim in a July 6 death in La Crosse that police describe as suspicious.

Doris Duke Wilson Hester

Doris Duke Wilson Hester, 80, of Chase City, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019 at her residence.


Mrs. Hester was born in North Carolina on Aug. 8, 1938 to the late Isaac Crute and Lucy Ogburn Crute. She was a 1956 graduate of West End High School, and member of Silone Baptist Church, Chase City. After high school, Mrs. Hester moved to Paterson, N.J., where she worked as a dietician for The Manor. She later relocated to Chase City, where she worked as a seamstress for Aileen in Victoria, and retired as a dietician from the Mecklenburg County Public Schools.


Cherishing her memories are her children, Wanda Hester, Wendolyn Hester and Winifred Dodson (Reginald), Bryan Hester and Byrone Hester; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; three nieces, Elizabeth Jefferson, Vernell Williams and Doris Mayo; a devoted friend she raised as her daughter, Carmen Tucker, and a vast number of other loving relatives and caring friends.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hester was preceded in death by her husband, Grady Hester Jr., son, Bernard A. Hester; grandson, Andre High; one brother, Isaac Crute Jr. and four sisters, Louise, Jeanette, Juliet and Elizabeth.

A funeral will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m. at Silone Baptist Church, Chase City, with Rev. Melvin J. Palmer officiating. Burial will follow in Silone Memorial Garden, Chase City. Public viewing for family and friends will be Friday, Jan 11, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
