Douglas Church, 88, of Halifax, died Saturday, May 25, 2019 at his home. He was born in Halifax County on May 17, 1931, son of the late Fletcher Church and Bessie Mae Coates Church and was married to the late Betty Noblin Church. He was of the Baptist faith, was retired from JP Stevens and was a US Navy Korean Conflict Veteran.

Mr. Church is survived by four daughters, Judy C. Chappell and husband H.L. of Vernon Hill, Ava Church of South Boston, Tammy C. McVay of Richmond, Dawn C. Meeler and husband Jimmy of Cluster Springs; one son, John D. Church and wife Cheryl of Halifax; seven grandchildren, Henry Chappell III, Shaun Franklin, Chris Raynor, Holly Powell, Bianca Meeler, Nate Meeler and Noah Meeler and 18 great-grandchildren; caregivers, Linda Clark and Bobbi Francis.

Two brothers, Frank B. Church and James S. Church, preceded him in death.

A funeral was held Tuesday, May 28, at 11 a.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Clinton McKinney officiating. Burial followed at Halifax Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at his home, 1009 Patterson Lane, Halifax.
