Florence Gravitt Buchanan / March 20, 2017

Florence Gravitt Buchanan of Madison, formerly of South Boston, died Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at the age of 79. She was born in Halifax County on May 9, 1937, the daughter of the late Henry Newman Gravitt and the late Alice Cole Gravitt and was married to the late Oscar Clayton Buchanan. Florence was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church. She was retired from Tultex, where she was a machine operator for many years and her passion was quilting.

Mrs. Buchanan is survived by her daughters, Angela B. Fitzgerald (Steve) of Midlothian and Wanda Smoot (Steve) of Locust Dale; her sons, Henry C. Buchanan (Gerald) of South Boston and Ricky D. Buchanan (Janis) of Barboursville; her grandchildren, Gerald Clayton Buchanan, Jessica B. Hite, Wendy Jones, Jill Frazier, Julie Locher, Peter Fitzgerald, Alice Keltner, Kristin Fitzgerald, and Brook Keltner; her five great-grandchildren; and her sister, Janis G. Murray (Jimmy) of Mebane, N.C.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Buchanan was preceded in death by her brothers, George Henry Gravitt and John Robert Gravitt, and her sister, Faye Gravitt.

A funeral was held on Sunday, March 19, at 3 p.m. at the Brooks Lyon Betty B. Jones Chapel with Rev. Jack Stewart officiating. Burial followed in the Virgilina Cemetery.

The family received friends an hour before the service, and at other times at the home of Willie Wilson, 1174 Alphonse Dairy Rd, South Boston.
