Gary John LaPorte Jr., 55, of Nathalie, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2021. He was born in Portsmouth, on May 21, 1966, son of Gaylene Smith and the late Gary John LaPorte Sr. He was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church. Gary attended East Lyme High School in E. Lyme and transferred to St. Bernard’s High School, where he played varsity soccer and continued to play pro soccer in Moodus, Conn. He was a natural born player.

Mr. LaPorte is survived by his son, Seth Anderson LaPorte and wife Rachel of China Grove, N.C.; his mother, Gaylene Smith and husband John Cunningham of Salem, Conn.; grandchild, Noah LaPorte of China Grove, N.C.; two brothers, Robert Davis LaPorte and wife Sandra of Salem, Conn., and William Bennett Cogar of Long View, Texas; step-daughter, Ryann Kraft (Josh Ward) of Lynchburg; his sponsor, Scott Kirk; former wife, Regina LaPorte; uncles and aunt, Robert W. Smith (Karen) of Chesapeake, Alton B. Smith (Shirley) of Keysville, David E. Smith of Louisiana, Donald Sass (Lois) of Minnesota and Gail LaPorte; nephew, Michael LaPorte; half-sisters, Kristie Brenenstall and Katherine LaPorte; step-sisters, Jennifer, Sharon and Melissa and their families; host of cousins of Virginia, Minnesota and Wisconsin; and special friend, Carlton Dobson.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
