South Boston Council votes in favor of cigarette tax

South Boston Town Council moved decisively to impose a 10 cent-per-pack tax on cigarette purchases in town by voting 4-1 in favor of the levy Monday night.

Herman Talmadge Ingram Jr., 67, of South Boston, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2017 at his home. He was born in Halifax County on March 8, 1950, a son of the late Herman Talmadge Ingram Sr. and Elizabeth Motley Ingram and was married to Sandra Womack Ingram. He was a former employee of JP Stevens and was an avid motorcyclist.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Ingram is survived by two sons, Jason Talmadge Ingram of South Boston and Travis Clifton Ingram and wife Crystal of Lynchburg; one brother, Ike Ingram of South Boston; one sister, Myrna I. Lewis of Vernon Hill; one grandchild, Lucas Bryson Ingram of Lynchburg.

Two brothers, Jimmy Ingram and E.T. Ingram, preceded him in death.

Memorial services will be held Monday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Don Bryant officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
