Howard Linzy Dunn, 59, a resident of Danville, passed away on Monday, April 19, 2010 after a long-term illness.

Howard was born Feb. 4, 1951 in Burlington N.C., and moved to Danville in 1957. He is a product of Danville City Public Schools and sports programs. He graduated from George Washington High School and continued to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a basketball scholarship. He graduated with a BS from Averett College and received his Masters in Physical Therapy from Old Dominion University.

Howard started Rehabilitation Services of Danville, the first private out-patient Physical Therapy practice in Danville in 1983. Howard expanded RSD with branch offices in South Boston, Chatham, and Gretna, and provided physical therapy services to home health patients and nursing home facilities. He also provided sports medicine and training to many high school and college athletic teams, as well as professional athletes.

Howard was very active with youth baseball and basketball programs, coaching teams and serving as commissioner of various leagues. He is a former board member of the Danville YMCA, Danville Golf Club, German Club, and Young Mens Club. He was also a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.

Howard is survived by his mother, Martha Edith Talley Dunn; his three children, Hudson McEwen Dunn, Richard Linzy Dunn, and Linzy Arrington Dunn, and their mother Mary Lou Dunn. He is also survived by his brother, Merrel Russell Dunn Jr. and wife Betsy; and sister Martha Jo Hodges and husband Tommy. Other survivors include nephews, Russell B. Dunn and wife Shannon, John Hodges and wife Anita, and Bradley Hodges and wife Kimberly; niece, Katherine Dunn Brooks and husband Michael, and daughter Charlotte. Howard is predeceased by his father Merrel Russell Dunn.

A memorial service will be held at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church on Friday, April 23, at 2 pm. Visitation will be at Townes Funeral Home Thursday, April 22, from 7-8:30 p.m.

Memorials can be made to Mount Vernon United Methodist Church Fill the Bus Fund, or the Danville Little League.
