Murder suspect in Halifax County turns himself in

James Earnest Thompson of Cardinal Court, South Boston died Friday, March 25, 2011 at Berry Hill Nursing Home at the age of 97. Born in South Boston on Nov. 9, 1913 to the late Earnest Thompson and Louise Farmer Thompson he was first married to the late Ethel Bratcher Clark Thompson and later to Sarah Ragland Thompson. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Ferry Street, South Boston.

Mr. Thompson is survived by four daughters, Freda T. Atkins and Ly-Wanda T. Carroll, both of Williamsburg, Barbara T. Hailey of South Boston and Jane T. Streeter of San Jose, Calif., a son, Jerome Betts of South Boston, six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, a great great granddaughter, two sisters, Malinda Thompson and Lillian Thompson, both of South Boston, a son-in-law, Marshall Atkins, two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Thompson and Odell Thompson and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral for Mr. Thompson will be held Monday, March 28 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Frank Coleman officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Barbara Hailey, 501 Cardinal Court, South Boston.
