James Edward Burwell, of Boydton, died at his residence on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at the age of eighty-one. He was born to the late Charlie and Claudia Burwell on November 7, 1928. James received his education in the Mecklenburg County School System at Greenwood School (a one room school) in Boydton. At an early age he joined Greenwood Baptist Church and remained a faithful member until his death.

James worked at Counsel Sawmill for many years. He also worked at Boydton Elementary School until he retired as a custodian. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister. James was not blessed with any children of his own, however, he loved Elaine, Jerome, Kelly, Mitchell, Timmy, Tommy, Kimberly, Denise and Donnie Richardson as his own. He leaves to cherish his memories: two sisters, Annie Perry and Mollie Mingo of Washington, DC; one sister-in-law, Alice Burwell of New Jersey; and a vast number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 22, at 1 p.m. at Greenwood Baptist Church in Boydton with Rev. Toney Smith, Pastor officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Carter’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
