Man sentenced to year in prison on drug count

Ten arrested, seven more sought in drug, firearms sweep

A long-term investigation has resulted in the arrest of 10 individuals in the Southside Virginia region on approximately 31 drug and firearm charges.

Victim identified in July 6 death in La Crosse

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office has identified Jessica Stroud, 35, of Waynesboro as the victim in a July 6 death in La Crosse that police describe as suspicious.

James Edward Fears Jr. / October 11, 2018

James Edward Fears Jr., 75, of Halifax, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2018 at his home. He was born in Halifax County on Jan. 10, 1943, a son of the late James Edward Fears, Sr. and Novella Crews Fears. He was married to Ann Baylous Fears, was a member of Winns Creek Baptist Church, a United States Army Era veteran and a retired farmer.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Fears is survived by one son, Thomas “Tom” Fears and wife Kelly of Halifax; one granddaughter, Carol Ann Fears of Blacksburg; two brothers, Macon Fears and wife Linda of Halifax and Kenneth Fears of Scottsburg.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby Fears and Larry Fears.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. at Winns Creek Baptist Church with Rev. James Kopco officiating.
