James Edward Guthrie, 97, of South Boston, formerly of Nathalie, died Friday, April 6, 2018 at Commonwealth Senior Living. He was born on Nov. 23, 1920. He was the husband of the late Eleanor Carwile Guthrie for 51 years.

Mr. Guthrie was born in the Clarkton community of Halifax County, a son of the late Flournoy Caldwell Guthrie and Virginia Turner Guthrie. He was a lifelong member of Childrey Baptist Church where he served as a former deacon, usher and homebound worker. He was an employee of Guthrie’s Store his entire life until retirement, except for the period of time he spent serving his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He and his wife Eleanor were faithful in visiting friends and family in the surrounding counties.

He is survived by two daughters, Catherine G. Younger and husband Larry, Hannah G. Vaughan and husband George D., Jr. all of Halifax; one son, David A. Guthrie of Raleigh, N.C.; five grandsons, Nathan Younger and wife Dana of Lynchburg, Seth Younger of Athens, Ga., Justin Younger of Halifax, Aaron Vaughan of Midlothian, and Joshua Vaughan of Charlotte, N.C.; one great-grandson, Drake Younger; one sister, Pattie G. Yates of Nathalie; one brother, Max Guthrie and wife Janice of Forest; and one sister-in-law, Elizabeth F. Guthrie of Nathalie.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Randolph and Charles “Sam” Guthrie; two sisters, Anne G. Jennings, and Mavin G. Adams.

A funeral was conducted Sunday, April 8, at 3 p.m. at Childrey Baptist Church, 1224 Childrey Church Road, Nathalie, by the Rev. Jerry Stanfield with interment following in the church cemetery.

The family received friends prior to the service at the church.
