James William Barksdale of Cedar Grove Road, South Boston died Friday, June 18, 2010 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 86. Born in Halifax County on Feb. 7, 1924, he was the son of the late Isaac Barksdale and Mildred Edmonds Barksdale. He was married to the late Alice Coleman Barksdale and was a retired employee of Halifax Regional Hospital. He was a member of New Arbor Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Deacons.

Mr. Barksdale is survived by four daughters, Dorothy Brigham of South Boston, Alease Parson of Clinton, Md., Sallie Jane Nash of Walkertown, N.C. and Mildred Ann Williams of Upper Marlboro, Md., two sons-in-law, Russell Parson and James Nash, a sister-in-law, Mabel Coleman of Alton, 11 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, James W. Barksdale Jr. and a sister, Sallie Palmer and a brother, Albert Barksdale.

A funeral service for Mr. Barksdale will be held Tuesday, June 22 at 1 p.m. at New Arbor Baptist Church with the Rev. Nelson Stamps and the Rev. Dwight Wilkerson officiating. Burial will follow in the Dan River Bethel Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home, 1077 Cedar Grove Road, South Boston.
