South Boston Council votes in favor of cigarette tax

South Boston Town Council moved decisively to impose a 10 cent-per-pack tax on cigarette purchases in town by voting 4-1 in favor of the levy Monday night.

Janie Terry was born in Mecklenburg County, on July 7, 1949 to the late Hayward and Lucy McCargo Terry. She entered eternal rest on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018 at her residence in Clarksville.

She was a member of Island Hill Christian Church. Janie was previously employed at Russell Stover Candies and also did day-care work. She enjoyed cooking “especially sweet potato pies and ham”. Janie had a green thumb for flowers and loved to dress. She was educated in the Mecklenburg County Public School System.

Cherishing her memories are her brother, Odell Terry, sister, Catherine Terry; five nieces and nephews and host of cousins other relatives friends and a special god-daughter, Nicole Smith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters Jennifer and Margerrine.
