Jason “Tubby” Matthew Smith, 32, of Java, died Saturday, July 6, 2019. He was born in Halifax County on Jan. 21, 1987, son of John Presley “JP” Smith Jr. and Rebecca Perkins Smith. He was a member of Halifax Baptist Church and River Hill Hunting Club. Jason was an avid hunter and fisherman with an infectious smile and he never met a stranger.

Mr. Smith is survived by his parents, John Presley “JP” Smith Jr. and wife Linda of Nathalie; his mother, Rebecca Perkins Smith of Halifax; his brother, Casey Wade of Halifax; his grandparents, Jeraleen Satterfield of Halifax and James and Frances Perkins of Halifax; his beloved pet, Little Bit and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

His grandfather, John P. Smith Sr. preceded him in death.

A funeral was held Wednesday, July 10, at 3 p.m. at Halifax Baptist Church with Rev. Eddie Collins and Rev. Dr. Eldridge Cullum officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

The family received friends two hours prior to service at the church and other times at the home of his father, 1144 Beulah Road, Nathalie.
