John H. Carter, 90, of Alton, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011 at The Woodview. He was born in Halifax County on July 29, 1920, a son of the late Mr. Samuel Carter and Mrs. Hallie Pounds Carter. He was married to the late Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Scott Carter and was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church.

He is survived by three sons, Leon H. Carter of West New York, N.J., John K. Carter of Largo, Fla. and Willie Carter of South Boston; three grandchildren; two sisters, Bernice Murphy of Alton and Hallie Carter of Philadelphia, Pa., one daughter-in-law, Charmaine Carter, other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be held Friday, Feb. 11 at 1 p.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Harvey Bigelow officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6-7 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the Sports Journalism Institute’s John H. Carter Scholarship Fund, 8 Pleasant Avenue, Suite B, Montclair, NJ 07042-3112.
