John Morgan Crews, 89, of Nathalie, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2019. He was born in Halifax County on Nov. 18, 1929, son of the late Claude Spurgeon Crews and the late Virginia Levinia Irby Crews He was married to Jessie Mildred Ambrose Crews, who survives, for 66 years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all who came in touch with him.

Mr. Crews was in the National Guard, Mason for over 50 years, tobacconist for 33 years with Export Leaf Tobacco Company. He worked at R.O. Harrell Trucking Company for 20 years and drove over one million miles without an accident. He was South Boston Speedway’s first flagman, served on Halifax Heritage Festival Committee, Halifax Quarter Scale Tractor Pull. He was a self-taught craftsman, “Jack of All Trades”, farmer who loved fishing, beach, lake and boats.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Crews is survived by daughters, Lisa Gillogly and husband Dan of Corolla, N.C., Laurie Mergler and husband Jeff of Waterford and Marion Jones and husband Cabell of Richmond; grandchildren, Rebecca Gillogly, Amy Riedel, Benjamin Mergler, Leah Martin, Johnny Martin, Gavin Jones, Carina Jones and Morgan Jones; and a great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Riedel.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Charles Melvin Irby Sr. and a grandson, West Sadler Martin.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Aug. 24, at 2 p.m. at Longview Farm, Nathalie.
