Josephine Hamlett Chappell, 79, of South Boston, died on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at her home. She was born in Semora, N.C., on Feb. 5, 1940, daughter of the late George Hamlett and Carrie Jones Hamlett. She was a member of Mizpah Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Chappell is survived by three daughters, Barbara Barksdale (Earl) of Owings Mill, Md., Doris Ferguson (Leo) of South Boston and Denise Chappell of South Boston; seven granddaughter; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Shirley Edmondson (Elmer) of South Boston; four brothers, Leroy Hamlett (Naomi) of Dry Fork, Joseph Hamlett (Jackie) of Detroit, Mich., William Hamlett and Harry Hamlett, both of Roxboro, N.C., two sisters-in-law; a devoted special friend, Willard Medley; 17 step-children and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one son, Shon Chappell and two brothers, Ralph Hamlett and Crawford Hamlett Sr.

A funeral will be held Saturday, March 16, at 11 a.m. at Mizpah Presbyterian Church with Rev. Barbara Carver as eulogist. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Public viewing for family and friends will be Friday, March 15 from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the home, 350B Poplar Creek Street, South Boston.
