LaVerne Young, 68, of Newark, N.J., died Sunday, May 19, 2019 at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.

Ms. Young was born on Sept. 11, 1950 in Newark, N.J. to Thelma W. Young and the late James Robert Young Sr. She obtained her early education in the public schools of Newark, and was a 1968 graduate of Weequahic High School. After high school, she entered the workforce at Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company, Newark, N.J., as a secretary. Her skills extended to working for other companies as a redactor operator, paralegal, and executive secretary. Ms. Young also attended the Culinary Arts School in Newark where she obtained a certificate and was hired by Bloomfield College, retiring in 2011.

She is survived by her son, William Daniel Hill III of Newark, N.J.; her mother, Thelma W. Young of Boydton; two brothers, Stephen V. Young (Shirley) and Mark K. Young (Zella) all of Boydton; one sister, Karen L. Young of Washington DC, a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by two brothers, James R. Young Jr. and John A. Young, and a sister, Janet M. Young.

A funeral was held Tuesday, May 28, at 11 a.m. at the chapel of C. H. Harris Funeral Home, Buffalo Junction with Elder Kenyatta Evans delivering the eulogy. Burial followed in the J. R. Young Family Cemetery.
