South Boston Council votes in favor of cigarette tax

South Boston Town Council moved decisively to impose a 10 cent-per-pack tax on cigarette purchases in town by voting 4-1 in favor of the levy Monday night.

Lois Clay Anderson, 81, of Nathalie, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018. She was born in Halifax County on Oct. 16, 1936, a daughter of the late Jesse Clay and Victory Wesley Clay. She was married to the late Vincent Edgar Anderson and was a member of First Baptist Church of Millstone.

Ms. Anderson is survived by four daughters, Joann Warriner of Appomattox, Linda W. Seamster and husband Frank of Gladys, Brenda K. Strange and husband Garland of Nathalie and Wendy A. Shelton and husband Juan of High Point, N.C.; two sons, Roy S. Warriner of Nathalie and Vincent Allen Anderson of Halifax; one half-brother, Lacy Beadles of Vernon Hill; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Annette Smith and siblings Maggie Layne, Lou Hanncock and Morrell Beadles.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.
