Louis James Herbert, Sr. of South Boston died Thursday, April 5, 2018 at Sentara Woodview at the age of 88.

Mr. Herbert was born in Halifax County on July 13, 1929 to the late Lewis Herbert and Maggie Waller Herbert. He was married to Joeannah Stanfield Herbert and was a member of Peaceful Tabernacle Baptist Church where he served as deacon.

Mr. Herbert is survived by his wife, Joeannah S. Herbert; three daughters, Lina M. Taylor (Ronald), Joan H. Martin (Reginald) and Deborah H. Chandler (Miles); two sons, Clifton C. Herbert and Louis James Herbert Jr.; seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; five siblings; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Herbert was preceded in death by eight siblings: Susie, Maggie, Irene, Elizabeth, Vernell, Hazel, Lewis and Cedric.

A funeral will be held Wednesday, April 11, at 11 a.m. at Peaceful Tabernacle Baptist Church with Rev. Jackie Stamps officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Public viewing will be on Tuesday, April 10 from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home chapel.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 2010 Maid Marion Lane, South Boston.
