Louise Powell Hawkins of Lynchburg, and formerly of Halifax County, died Saturday, July 1, 2017 at the Lynchburg General Hospital. She was born Oct. 25, 1923 in Halifax County and was 93 years old. She was the daughter of the late Charles Henry Powell and the late Annie Smith Powell and was married to the late Bennie B. Hawkins.

She was a member of the Dan River Baptist Church, was a volunteer with Good Samaritan, and worked for the Virginia Telephone and Telegraph Company.

Mrs. Hawkins is survived by a sister, Jeanette Powell Newton of South Boston and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by seven sisters, Mae McKinney, Elizabeth Powell, Fannie Childrey, Lorene Hatcher, Gracie Burke, and Pauline Nelson and three brothers, Lester Powell, Hagood Powell, and Edward Powell

A funeral will be held Tuesday, July 4, at 11 a.m. at the Dan River Baptist Church with the Rev. Doug Gibson presiding. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Dan River Baptist Church.
