On Wednesday, July 22, 2020, Mary Elizabeth Townes Burwell died after a brief illness at the Community Memorial Health Center of VCU Health Systems.

Mary was the fifth child born to the late Linton Frissell Townes and Ida Glenn Carter Townes of the township formerly known as Finchley. Mary completed her high school education at the former West End High School in Skipwith.

She accepted Christ at any early age. She is a life member of the New Liberty Baptist Church and remained active there until her health began to decline.

Mary lived to be the Matriarch of the Townes family.

Mary leaves to cherish her memory, four children Donald Wayne, Elston Eugene, of the home, George Alfred and wife Damita Burwell, of Clarksville, and Sandra Alesia Nowell, of Chesterfield, seven grandchildren Robert (Juney) Simpson Burwell II and wife Fernita Christmas Burwell, of Chicago, Lafonda Sharese Burwell, Derrick Wayne Burwell and fiancé Ginger, of Maryland, Adam Delaney Nowell, and Raymond Edward Nowell, of Richmond, Danielle Lindsay Burwell and George Alfred Burwell II, of Clarksville, six great grandchildren Kenneth Burwell-Tibbs, Robert (Robbie) Burwell III, Shaun Burwell, Jackson Burwell, Joseph Burwell, and Giselle Burwell. Two sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, three devoted nieces Naila (Iris) Ahmed, of Tampa, Linda Brown, and Margaret Ottiti, of New York. Devoted daughter-in-law Joyce Burwell, a cherished aunt Louise Burwell, of Clarksville and cousin Marie Baker, of New York, close cousins Thad and Margie Carter, of Chase City, dedicated neighbors Charles and Doris Allen and a host of grand-nieces and grand-nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends

A funeral was held Monday, July 27, at 9:30 a.m. at St. John’s A.M.E. Church.

Services was entrusted to Carter’s Funeral Home.
