Mary Jane Hawkins Fletcher Melton, 80, of 1065 Hawkins Loop Road, Hurdle Mills, N.C .,died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2018. Born in Caswell County, Mrs. Melton was the daughter of the late Robert Baynes and Nannie Lee Whitfield Hawkins and was the wife of the late Bill Melton.

Mrs. Melton taught for over 30 years at Halifax High School. She had attended Black Walnut Baptist Church. She was currently a member of the Christian Women’s Club.

Mrs. Melton was preceded in death by her brother, James”Jimmy” Hawkins.

Mrs. Melton is survived by three children, Janis Buchanan, of Barboursville, Wanda Fletcher-Womack of Vernon Hill and Donald Eugene Fletcher, of Hurdle Mills; four sisters, Rebecca Clayton, of Timberlake, Brenda Oakley of Rougemont, Linda Bowes, of Hurdle Mills and Doris Hawkins, of Timberlake; two grandchildren, Wendy Crews and Jillian Frazier; four great-grandchildren and her special dog Penford.

A funeral Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 2 p.m., at Brooks & White Chapel by the Rev. Alfred Rimmer. Burial will follow in the Flat River Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral.

Pallbearers will be Adam Crews, Billy Hawkins, Frank Frazier, Roy Gordon, Mickey Glassock, and Kevin Moore.
