Mary Ruth Harris Crute Talley

Mary Ruth Harris was born on Jan. 8, 1940, to the late Robert Elmore Harris and Lou Burnette Harris, and was called home on Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013.

Mary Ruth attended the Mecklenburg County Schools graduating from West End High School in 1956. Mary later earned a degree in human services from Southside Virginia Community College. Mary led a career path that involved helping those in need. She was employed as an instructional aide and a school bus driver with Mecklenburg County Schools; counselor, Mecklenburg Correctional Center, and as an intake social worker at Warren Hills Nursing Facility. Mary Ruth was baptized and became a member of Lands Chapel RZUA Church at an early age. Mary later joined Sharon Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member for more than 50 years. Mary was a straightforward lady who strived to make a difference by being a servant to others. She often stated, “If I can help someone along the way, my life will be worth living.” Mary upheld this belief with love, wisdom and a touch of spice! Mary was truly loved and respected by her family, friends and community members. She was an inspiration to all those who were blessed to know her.

Mary Ruth married Willie L. Crute Sr. in 1958 and had two children, Willie L. Crute Jr. and Beverly Crute Baugh. She later married Thomas E. Talley in 1981, who preceded her in death.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, siblings, Lou Bertha Manning, Jurell Davis, Robert Davis, Katherine Bullock, Clementine Hill and Amanda Durham.

“Mommie” leaves to share her memories her son Willie L. Crute, Jr. (Beverly); daughter, Beverly Crute Baugh; grandchildren, Kenyetta Hatcher Jones (Brandon), Evan Marshall Baugh, Robert Decater Crute; great-grandchildren, Brennan Jones, Brielle Jones, Kendall Jones; sister Angie M. Harris; brother, Edward Bernard Harris; sister-in-law, Mary C. Mitchell, Gustavia Talley, Mary P. Talley, Hattie Judkins; special “sister”-in-law, Pattie M. Harris; special “sister”, Yvonne E. Coleman; brother-in-law, Issac Talley; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral will be held Friday, Nov. 15, at 1 p.m. at the Sharon Baptist Church.

The family requests in lieu of flowers that you make a contribution to the Cancer Society.

Carter’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
