Thomas Dickerson Coates, 81, of Crewe, died Monday, Sept. 20, 2021. He was born in Halifax County on Aug. 15, 1940, son of the late Cabell Thomas Coates and the late Thelma Hudson Coates and was married to Sharon Blevins “Sherry” Coates, who survives. He was a member of First Baptist Church, South Boston, and Boy Scouts of America, where he was an Eagle Scout and Scoutmaster.

Mr. Coates is survived by his wife, Sharon B. “Sherry” Coates; three children, Susanne Coates, Mary Coates and Anne Coates; step-children, Rodney, Melissa and Jessica; four grandchildren, Maryanne, Mindy, Sasha and Tristan; five step-grandchildren, Jordin, Phil, Hallie, Chloe and Riley; two step-great-grandchildren, Jeanne and Ava; and a host of extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ida Frances Tuck Coates.

Graveside services will be held Friday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m. at Oak Ridge Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Ben Powers officiating.
