Vealer Mae Jeffress Staten, 71, of South Boston, died Monday, June 29, 2020 at Duke University Hospital. She was born in Halifax County on Jan. 4, 1949, daughter of Edith Flenoury Jeffress and the late Freddie Jeffress. She was married to Ralph Staten Sr. and was a member of Spanish Grove Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Ralph Staten Sr. of the home; two sons, Ralph Staten Jr. (Karen) and Karl Staten, all of South Boston; one step-daughter, Yvette Armistead of Yonkers, N.Y.; one goddaughter, Shavone “Nikki” Terry of Los Angeles, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; her mother, Edith Jeffress of South Boston; one sister, Jane Marable (Joseph), three brothers, Freddie S. Jeffress,Jr. (Yolanda), Gerald D. Jeffress (Cynthia) and Rufus K. Jeffress Sr. (Angela); five sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, including the devoted Diane Battle.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Gloria J. Stokes and one brother, Joel M. Jeffress.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, July 9, at 10 a.m. at Spanish Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Ronnie Womack as eulogist.

Public viewing was held Wednesday, July 8 from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home.
