Virginia Mae Lester, 73, of Crawford Road, Halifax died on Sunday, July 30, 2017 at Sentara Woodview. She was born in Halifax County on May 24, 1944, a daughter of the late George Hailey Irby and Irene Terry Irby. She was married to the late Sanford Lester Jr. and was a member of Union Grove C.M.E. Church.

Mrs. Lester is survived by two sisters, Bobbie Ann Womack and husband Willie of Halifax and Sue Alice Johnson and husband Elijah of Danville; one brother, Luther Irby and wife Lula of Virginia Beach; three devoted nieces, Mary Sydnor, Shirley Harris and Anna Womack and other relatives and friends, including her devoted cousin and friend, Evon Terry.

She was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Mary Wood, Linwood Irby, Martha Harris and William Pen Irby.

A funeral will be held Saturday, Aug. 5 at 2 p.m. at Union Grove C.M.E. Church with Pastor Charles Hudson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Public viewing Friday, Aug. 4 from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 704 Hedderly Street, Halifax.
