Virginia McCargo Barksdale of South Boston died Saturday, March 14 at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 97.

Mrs. Barksdale was born in Charlotte County on Aug. 6, 1922 to the late John E. McCargo and Virginia Brooks McCargo. She was first married to the late Henry Arthur Jennings and later married the late Levi D. Barksdale. She was a member of St. Matthew Baptist Church.

Mrs. Barksdale is survived by a daughter, Alice J. Hunt; a son, Carl Jennings; a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren; the devoted Jenita Jordan, Taletha Jiggetts and Rosa Hunt; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husbands, Virginia was preceded in death by a daughter, Nina M. Price; four infant children; and eight siblings, John W. McCargo, Charlie McCargo, Hurbert McCargo, Columbus McCargo, Burriel McCargo, Edye McCargo, Mattie Thompson and Alice Taylor.

Due to public health concerns, there was a private service held Friday, March 20 at 1 p.m. with services at St. Matthew Baptist Church with Rev. Alfred Chandler officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery.
