Walter Robertson Coates of Nathalie passed away Thursday, May 11, 2017 at his home. He was born Sept. 7, 1968 in Halifax County, and was 48 years old. He was the son of the late Ronald Carter Coates and the late Faye Martin Coates Moore and was married to Beth Reese Coates, who survives.

He was the owner/operator of Coates Gun Shop. His love of guns and teaching gun safety were his passion.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Kaitlyn Carter Coates and Brianna Faye Coates, both of Halifax, a son, Brandon Walker Coates, also of Halifax, two step-children, Blake Powell of Concord, N.C., and Katelyn Redd of Nathalie, a brother, Ronald Carter Coates, Jr. and friend Joy of Halifax and a niece, Samantha Coates of Florida.

A memorial service will be held Monday, May 15 at 7 p.m. at the Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Chris Cook, Rev. Ken Warfield and the Rev. Thad Decker officiating. Burial will follow in the Liberty Christian Church Cemetery at a later date.

The family will receive friends after the service on Monday at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Beth’s father, Buddy Reese, 3046 Leda-Grove Road, Nathalie.
