William Herbert Smith Jr.

William Herbert Smith Jr., 67, of Halifax, died Sunday, March 12, 2017. He was born in Brunswick County on Sept. 18, 1949, son of the late William Herbert Smith Sr. and Nellie Whitby Smith and was married to Sandra Saseen-Smith.

He was a member of St. Paschal Baylon Catholic Church, was former vice president of the National Defender Investigator Association, was a member of Knights of Columbus, served in the Army National Guard and served on the Halifax Planning Commission.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Smith is survived by one son, Matthew Warren Smith and wife Holly of South Hill; two grandchildren, Hannah Smith of Crewe and Collin Smith of South Hill; one step-granddaughter, Allyson Allgood of South Hill; one brother, Jerry Smith of Lawrenceville and one sister, Brenda Smith Lewis and husband David of Brodnax.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, March 16 at 11 a.m. at St. Paschal Baylon Catholic Church with Father Eduard Ntunde officiating. Burial will follow at Matthews Chapel United Methodist Church, 1538 Matthews Chapel Road, Lawrenceville at 3:30 p.m.

The family received friends at Powell Funeral Home Wednesday, March 15 from 7-8:30 p.m.
