William Wayne Coates of 7244 Philpott Road, South Boston died Sunday, April 25, 2010 at his home. Born in Roxboro, N.C. on Jan. 10, 1943, he was 67 at the time of his death.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Bethel Baptist Church and VFW Post 8243.

Mr. Coates is survived by his wife, Nancy P. Coates of the home and a brother, Freddie Coates of South Boston and two sisters, Pat Shelburne of Radford and Janice Perkins of Halifax, a stepdaughter, Gayle Brown and a stepson, Carroll Thomason, five step grandchildren and four step great grandchildren.

A graveside service for Mr. Coates will be conducted on Wednesday, April 28 at 2 p.m. at the Bethel Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Ron Rhew officiating. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Halifax County Cancer Association, P. O. Box 875, South Boston, VA 24592 or to the Halifax Regional Hospice, 2204 Wilborn Avenue, South Boston, VA 24592. On-line condolences may be made at
