He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Bethel Baptist Church and VFW Post 8243. Mr. Coates is survived by his wife, Nancy P. Coates of the home and a brother, Freddie Coates of South Boston and two sisters, Pat Shelburne of Radford and Janice Perkins of Halifax, a stepdaughter, Gayle Brown and a stepson, Carroll Thomason, five step grandchildren and four step great grandchildren. A graveside service for Mr. Coates will be conducted on Wednesday, April 28 at 2 p.m. at the Bethel Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Ron Rhew officiating. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Halifax County Cancer Association, P. O.
