Born in Vinton on May 10, 1934, he was the son of the late Raymond Sims and Barbara Street Sims. He was married to Alice Dixon Sims and was a member of Union Grove Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.
Mr. Sims is survived by his wife and two sons, Bret Owen and wife, Mattie of South Boston and Dionn Owen of Winston-Salem, N.C., two grandchildren, a sister, Mary S. Coleman of Virgilina, three brothers-in-law, William Dixon and wife, Vivian, James P. Dixon and Willie Dixon and wife, Queen, all of Halifax, a sister-in-law, Addie Pearl Sims of Halifax and a host of nieces and nephews, including the devoted Edward Sims.
A funeral will be conducted Monday, May 13 at 2 p.m. at Union Grove CME Church, with Rev. Jackie Stamps and Rev. Alfred Parker officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service on Monday and at all other times at the residence, 1150 Daniels Trail, Halifax.
Public viewing for family and friends was on Sunday from noon-6 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home.
