Tasks at hand

At a time when most of us are frustrated and upset and angry on a regular basis — there’s no shortage of material to stew over — it serves no purpose to play the part of the Town Scoldilocks, telling everyone else what they’ve been doing wrong throughout this miserable pandemic. That doesn’t mean people shouldn’t be given a heads-up about the 20-car pileup straight ahead before they plow their bandwagon smack into it.

The book on Bob

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of interviewing Bob McDonnell as he made a campaign swing through Southside, and I came away reminded that the man is as smooth, felicitous and formidable as candidates come.

There was an interesting story out of Charlottesville this week about a lobbying outfit that got busted for sending forged letters to Fifth District Rep. Tom Perriello. The Charlottesville Daily-Progress reported that Bonner & Associates, a corporate-friendly lobby shop, sent letters to Perriello opposing cap-and-trade legislation that were signed by leaders of the local NAACP and Creciendo Juntos, a Hispanic non-profit network. Only it turns out these groups oppose no such thing, and the letters were signed by fictitious persons on stationery with the organizations’ letterheads. Since the story broke, other instances of fraudulent letters surfacing at Congressional offices have been reported. Props to Perriello for being the first to ferret out this fraud.
