About today’s Sun

SoVaNow.com / August 21, 2019

Today’s edition of The Sun is going out to 20,000-plus homes in Mecklenburg, Charlotte, Brunswick and Lunenburg as our way of introducing new readers to our newspaper and inviting current readers to re-up their subscriptions for another year (or more). Yes, The Sun is kicking off our annual subscription drive — we hope you’ll like what you see.

These are challenging times in the newspaper industry, but amid the dark clouds that seem to hover over many newspapers, we like to think that our jobs will be secure as long as we perform a job that the public finds valuable — in our case, reporting news of the community that readers may find helpful, enlightening, and perhaps even entertaining. It’s not always the easiest task, and some of our work is forgotten sooner than the rest, but local newspapers remain essential to the task of maintaining a healthy and well-informed small-D democratic society. Here at The Sun we try to do our part to uphold that duty.

In turn, we’re always honored whenever folks deign to place their trust in us.

We’ll stumble at times, true, and we’ll always be prone to disappointing someone somewhere somehow (can you get out of bed in the morning and not do so at some point?), but we do take pride in the work, and we do aim to please — as much as the job of conveying often unpleasant information can leave anyone with a warm fuzzy toward us lodged in their mind. The world is beautiful, routine, nasty, inscrutable, riotous, ridiculous and sublime all at once — a jumble of contradictions and perplexities that we try to capture in these pages once a week.

It should go without saying that we couldn’t begin to do this job without the support of our readers and advertisers, who provide the revenue life blood of our organization (and of most news media). Thank you! We hope that you’ll take this opportunity to subscribe to The Sun — you’ll save on a year of having your paper delivered straight to your mail box, and all you have to do is look inside today’s mass mailing for the order form inside. (There’s a postage-paid envelope you can use, too). The cost of subscribing to The Sun is only $16.00 a year for local-area readers ($32 for out-of-area readers.)

Alas, due to rising costs — did you know that newsprint was subject to tariffs at various times in the past year? — the regular Sun subscription price is rising to $18 at the end of our drive, in December.

By subscribing now, you’ll us help carry forward our mission to chronicle the life of our community. We think it’s a job worth doing, and we need your support to continue doing it.

And thank you once again!
