In gratitude / December 04, 2014

Dear Viewpoint:

I am writing this on behalf of my husband, Bob Cage. It is a love letter of sorts to the people of Halifax County. Never have I met an individual so firmly rooted in home in its most all-encompassing definition. Bob spoke often of growing up in a town where neighbors looked after one another and took him as a young boy under their wing. He always vowed, he said, to come back and to give back to the place he loved so dearly. Bob kept that promise in many, many ways.

As Bob valiantly moved through the final stages of Parkinson’s Disease, he never complained — not once. He fought the toughest battle of his life with characteristic tenacity and courage. To each of you who have come forward to offer condolences and recount things Bob said or did, I thank you. Many of the stories are ones I had not heard and add new dimensions to the man I love so dearly. All of them exemplify his joy in life and in people, his endless humor and spirit of fun, and his compassionate heart. He never met a stranger and never forgot a friend. In these last few weeks of hardship, your support and kindness to both of us have meant the world. Grateful thanks to you all.

Sandy Cage
